The Echoplex does an intelligent MIDI merge between the MIDI in and MIDI
out connections. We called it MIDIpipe. Whatever comes in to the MIDI in
gets sent back out the MIDI out, and whatever MIDI commands the Echoplex
itself is generating are mixed into that stream to the MIDI out. However,
it is intelligent and will not send a command through if it will just be a
duplicated command.

We designed this in LoopIV because people wanted to string together
multiple Echoplexes in so many different ways. This makes it possible for
a
lot more combinations to work easily, and still all be controlled in a
simple fashion from one controller.

For example, if a MIDI clock message came from a previous unit in the
chain
and the unit doing the merging is also ready to send a clock command
(maybe
they were all starting a loop together), it will be smart enough to know
there is already a clock and not duplicate it. Your drum machine at the
end
won't suddenly go into double time.

This is all really transparent. The point is for it to Just Work so you
shouldn't have to worry about it or care what is going on behind the
scenes. plug and play.

I explained it much better in the manual, page 7-8:
