Re: thinking about moving from rack to laptop...advice please!le

I've replaced my rack with a MacBook and a RME 400 in 2007 and I'm really happy.
I use bidule and mobius controlled by one FCB: less weight, endless options of audio-midi configurations, flexbility and "a 32 bit" quality sound...i don't need more...
Nowdays i'm not using anymore my beloved Kaoss Pad.

Sure, at the beginning you have to spent part or your time working to get your preferred configuration and "sound", and it never would be the same as you get from your hw rig, but many doors will open switching to software.
But...attention: do not following or testing e v e r y new plugin that comes out, just try to understand what you need and then look for it. Too many possibilities, your taste and patience are the only limits.

fantastic discussion, guys. it looks like midi and the way it's handled by the host may be the deciding factor. sottilaro's ableton setup is almost exactly what i had in mind originally, but having messed around with bidule and heard per's comments on mainstage, i'm on the fence at the moment. i think i'll have to "mock up" various setups on my imac first to see how they work before taking the plunge and getting a laptop. if i have anything interesting to report, or useful comparisons to make, i'll try and post my conclusions here. its going to be a tough process, because i'm really in love with my soundset, but i've had it a while now and i think it's time for a change. i could spend several weeks reprogramming all my patches, but i'll have to do that with a new laptop setup anyway....

happy with this and still experimenting ... and contrary to what Andy says, all these new possibilities sparked my musical imagination big time.
