I think the term "Indie Pop" was mentioned.
Anyone else out there hate Indie Pop?

NO!! I LOVE Indie pop... (not sure if it being called pop or rock helps at all?) Im not a huge fan of the somewhat dreary moany whiny indie music, but I love the noisy, messy distorted happy sounds of 80īs indie. Bands like Lush, Wedding Present, My Bloody Valentine, Blur, Moonshake, Silver fish (maybe more grunge?) Ride, Primal Scream,The Smiths, Jesus and Mary Chain, Does anyone remember the very wonderful Fire Engines?

Im realizing now that Ive quoted mostly (or all) English Indie bands, and when I think about how it sounded in the US, (REM, Pixies) was never really "indie" sounding to me... Pixies were cool, but were they "indie"? I dont think so, they had more influences from US Hardcore etc...

I actually have a copy of the NME cassette called C86, that was often cited as the beginning of the style of "indie" music, forgetting for a moment the REAL meaning of indie, as in independant label.

This to me was pop music (as in happy happy songs) written by people with fairly little musical skill, but with a BONUS of enthusiasm, resulted in great songs, but without the annoying fluff of earnest singer/songwriters, or commercialism or ego... Yes.. its the lack of ego I think that I found so appealing... just speedy, distorted music with great tunes...

I mean, we know that "girl guide" chords (as opposed to Barre Chords) sound terrible distorted... well no one told the "indie kids" that.. so you get this wonderful clashing mush, often on these really twangy guitars (fender teles and jags)..

Sorry Andy... but Ill have to arm-wrestle you on that one!

:-)
