i use a midi footcontroller > midi cable > control surface > usb > mac > ableton - just like you want to do, kevin and it works like a charm no internal routing needed - like i said before, just install any drivers that come with the control surface (if it has any) - connect it all up and then in ableton midi preferences, just hit the checkboxes next to you control surface in the midi inout section, to let live know that's what you want to use for midi input. when you want to assign any of the knobs, faders or buttons to any of the objects in live, just hit the "midi" button (top right), select the object in live and then hit your button, or twiddle the knob you want to assign to it and the link is made. you can control plugins too, but this involves an extra step and is probably best dealt with in a future discussion, if you don't manage to figure it out from the manual. sim
