i use a midi footcontroller > midi cable > control surface > usb > mac

no internal routing needed - like i said before, just install any
drivers that come with the control surface (if it has any) - connect
it all up and then in ableton midi preferences, just hit the
checkboxes next to you control surface in the midi inout section, to
let live know that's what you want to use for midi input.
when you want to assign any of the knobs, faders or buttons to any of
the objects in live, just hit the "midi" button (top right), select
the object in live and then hit your button, or twiddle the knob you
want to assign to it and the link is made. you can control plugins
too, but this involves an extra step and is probably best dealt with
in a future discussion, if you don't manage to figure it out from the
manual.
