Re: Multi-channel Granular Loops

Sure, it would be my pleasure.

The performance system (including the visual) was built in Pd to
function along with the multi-channel output of my guitar (i.e. audio
for each string using a MIDI guitar pick-up and a self-made
pre-amp/break-out box). Each colored block in the visual is a string
being spatialised in surround sound (ambisonics) within the
performance space. The speakers are positioned in such a way that they
are surrounding the audience. The spatial gestures per string are
provided by an algorithm called "boids" (available in Pd and Max)
which was used to simulate flocking behaviors in nature.

I have created a figurative relationship between the pitch of my
guitar and the flocking behaviors so that when I play a specified
tonic pitch the audio for the strings flock to the centre point. If I
play a pitch outside of a diatonic set, it causes spatial inertia. I
have also built more complex abstractions based on voice-leading
principles etc.

The blocks in the middle of the screen represent amplitude of the two
monitors onstage, both left and right.

If you have any more questions, let me know. I have a CD completed of
all of this material over at http://signalsundertests.rickygraham.com

Cheers,
Ricky
