Ah okay thanks for the clarification!  Live's midi implementation does leave something to be desired but I haven't run up against any issues with its routing that couldn't be solved with the loop back technique.  It's so long ago that I learned that trick that it's second nature now though I do remember being frustrated with it at first. 

I generally have Looper's first loop setting Live's tempo.  If you tell the device how many bars the first loop should be the tempo should be fairly accurate.  But I don't know how others are using it.

Also, why would one have to mime the first loop?  Not doubting you, just not sure what you mean!

The Ableton looper doesn't let you set the tempo by tapping in the loop.
Workaround is to pre-record a first layer that works as a click track.

Consequently, miming the first loop is not unheard of.

There's no such nifty MIDI routing at all on those pedals! :-)

but midi control is usually needed for software looping... yes?
