RE: Issues with Mobius and SampleTank on windows 8

A slight correction...

It's not just simple file system access that raises a security alert, it is trying to write things to c:\Program Files or c:\Program Files (x86).  This is where Mobius stores global configuration information and a lot of other apps written before Windows Vista do too.  The reason it's a security alert is because once you can write to those directories you can in theory make changes to OTHER programs to inject viruses or capture passwords or do something evil.  So as always, you need to know the source of anything you execute and run a virus scan on it immediately after downloading.

It could be file permission problems.    Windows has gradually been adding more security features to the OS, some of these require applications to change the way they are written in order to avoid security violations.  One of these is directly accessing the file system which Mobius certainly does and SampleTank probably does too.  Many developers haven't bothered making those changes so when you try to run some older programs you'll get a popup asking for run as admin permission, or they mail fail to run at all.

Rather than deal with popups and special run as menu options, I permanently make the executable run at administrator level and forget about it.  It's a variant of the third approach here:

Only instead of creating a shortcut, you can use Windows Explorer to navigate directly to the executable, right click, properties, Compatibility tab, and check Run as adminstrator.

The only "bad" thing that might happen is if the program is malicious it can alter sensitive system files.  If you trust where it is coming from then you don't need to worry about this.  You certainly don't have to worry about Mobius, SampleTank, or any of the commercial hosts.

I've already given myself admin privilages. But that doesn't make a difference. Basically when I run as admin and save presets, those presets are only visible the next time if I run as admin again. And when I run it without clicking "run as admin" the presets I make then, are only visible the next time if I run without clicking "run as admin." The reason this bugs me is because SampleTank (A great free sample player), for somereason asks for administrative privilages when I run it as a vst. Therefore I have to run the entire host as administrator which in turn affects what presets mobius displays. I don't want to have to run the host as administrator every time I open it. It just seems like something bad will happen down the road if I do.

I haven't had time to explore this fully, but starting with Windows 7 they changed the way that configuration files are stored.  To the application it looks like they're in c:\Program Files (x86)\Mobius 2, but they're actually being redirected to a location under c:\Users.   This is sensitive to the user that is logged in, which may explain why you're seeing different presets.  There are actually two copies of the Mobius config files.

Try giving your normal user administrative privileges.  I don't have a Windows machine in front of me, but log in as Administrator, go to control panel and find whatever it is that edits users.  You should be able to select and add permissions to your normal user.

I've been trying to configure mobius and sampletank but there seem to be administrative problems with win8. If i run mobius as administrator, it loads different presets than when i run it in normal mode. Also, whenever i try to use sampletank, either as a vst or a standalone, i get a message stating that sampletank needs administrative privilages and to close and reopen the program as administrator. I know some of you said just move back to windows 7, but I really like windows 8 besides this issue, so hopefully someone will be patient enough to help me with this risky endeavor.
