Hi All,SoftStep is designed to operate with or without a host computer.SoftStep operates with the SoftStep application to talk to other applications. The SoftStep plugs into USB and the application (available on our site for Mac and PC) is used to edit and store Scenes as well as for additional user interface.SoftStep uses a variation of the SoftStep application as an editor to program the hardware unit. Once programmed the hardware unit will operate in "Standalone" mode. You will need the MIDI Expander to get data out of the SoftStep. We plan a Gate/CV out expander in the near future. Our K-Bow violin sensor bow uses Bluetooth. http://www.keithmcmillen.com/products/k-bow/The footswitch draws power for illumination and displays that the batteries would have added unacceptable weight for a wireless version.KeithKeith McMillen

My understanding is that the software just sets up the pedal, and that its possible to use with hardware only, it is possible to use via midi after all, if using the extar midi box thingy...
I am however not completely sure about anything, now I come to write it...
