It smells a bit like clock issues.  Is there a clock input on the GR55? On 
your RME thing?

Might be irrelevant, but I found my sound improved noticeably when I 
slaved all digital stuff to a master clock.  "Dumbing down" sounds like 
clock weirdness.  Jitter?

I'm sure you know this, Per.  I just had a minute and felt like raising my 
hand in class, even if my answer was shaky.
